The Alpha Kappa Delta Constitution (Article III, Section 3) states that undergraduates must meet the following minimum criteria (chapters may increase these standards):
  • Must be an officially declared sociology major or demonstrate a serious interest in sociology within an official program of the host institution
    • Sociology minors are eligible
    • Other majors are eligible so long as they have taken at least four SOC classes and meet all other requirements
  • Must be at least a junior (third year) by standards of the host institution
  • Shall rank in the top 35% of their graduating class in general scholarship
    • If class rank is not readily available to a chapter representative, in lieu of class rank, students shall have accumulated the equivalent of an overall grade point average of at least 3.3 by a four point scale where: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0
  • Must have maintained the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA in sociology courses taken at the host institution prior to initiation
  • Must have completed at least four courses in sociology (the equivalent of 12 semester hours) prior to initiation


Graduate students must meet the following minimum criteria (chapters may increase these standards):
  • Must be officially admitted to graduate study in sociology at the host institution
  • Completion of one half year of graduate study in sociology (i.e., one semester or two quarters or the equivalent academic unit)
  • Graduate GPA of a B or better
  • Continued matriculation in a program of study leading toward a graduate degree in sociology at the host institution 

Staff/Faculty Members must meet the following:

  • Formal conferral of the Ph.D. in sociology or employment as a sociologist are required prior to initiation, provided they meet the other requirements set forth above
Chapter Representatives must meet the following:
  • Must be a full-time faculty member
  • Must hold a Ph.D. in sociology
  • Must be an active Voting member of Alpha Kappa Delta

Chapters and eligibility standards:
Chapters must adhere to Alpha Kappa Delta's minimum eligibility standards. They may increase the standards (including sociology and overall GPA) should they chose to do so.

Transfer membership: Members may transfer their membership from one chapter to another without having to pay an additional fee. Please have the chapter representative e-mail the office with this change.

Initiation into Alpha Kappa Delta is a lifetime fee of $50.00. Those wishing to be Voting members and maintain their current subscriptions to Sociological Inquiry must renew their membership each year.
