Student Member Research Travel Grant

Sociological regional meetings AKD currently funds include the following:

  • Eastern Sociological Society
  • Mid-South Sociological Association
  • Midwest Sociological Society
  • North Central Sociological Association
  • Pacific Sociological Association
  • Southern Sociological Society
  • Southwestern Social Sciences Association

Alpha Kappa Delta does not fund those traveling to the annual American Sociological Association (ASA) meetings. Please visit ASA’s website at for information on their student funding travel program.


Upon approval of the application, Alpha Kappa Delta will fund up to $400 per student, but no more than $1,200 per chapter per academic year.

Please note the amount requested may not be what you are approved for as the amount available is prorated based on the number of eligible requests received in our office.

There will be no prepayment of funds.

Fall deadline: September 25, 2019
Winter deadline: January 31, 2020 (ESS applications are due by this date)
Spring deadline: February 28, 2020

*Deadlines are the dates in which applications are reviewed. Spring travel applications may be sent in at the fall and winter deadline.

Remember that funds are limited. Alpha Kappa Delta holds the right to fund less than the amount requested.  Funds may not be available after the spring deadline.


  • One application per chapter - please combine all requests if students are attending different regional meetings
  • Funding is for AKD student members only
    • For application purposes, we will accept multiple membership orders per semester.
    • Applications for membership must be received in the Executive Office before the deadline.
  • Only current undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to receive funding
  • Students must be presenting at a session or presenting a poster to receive funding
    • For application purposes, we will only need a student’s abstract that has been/will be sent in to the regional society in order to approve funding (it does not need to be officially approved for presentation at the conference by our deadline).
  • Only students who have completed travel release forms are eligible for support. The travel release form(s) is due with the application.
  • Chapters must be active and in good standing with the Executive Office in order to receive funding.
  • Only Chapter Representatives who are Voting members of AKD are eligible to apply for student travel support.
    • Active membership runs by calendar year (January through December). Only sociology faculty members may serve as Chapter Representatives.  
  • Applications must be reasonable. Funding levels depend on the plausibility of applications. Payment amounts depend on the accuracy and completeness of reports.

Travel release forms are due with the student travel application and certification form. If the AKD Executive Office does not receive these forms before travel, AKD funding will not be provided.

An eligible Chapter Representative and the Department Chair complete an application form and a certification form.  Students wishing to travel must complete a travel release form. These three completed forms must be received in the AKD Office by the appropriate deadline and before travel

Use an appropriate subject heading (ex. Student Travel Grant to ESS). Requests are reviewed in the order received and are on a first come, first served basis. Please submit your travel application before travel.

We prefer the travel release form(s) be scanned and e-mailed to along with your application.

The AKD Office will acknowledge requests in two ways:

  1. The office staff will reply to the emailed request indicating receipt.
  2.  The Executive Director will send an email to the Chapter Representative approving or denying an award of student travel grant support no later than one week after the deadline. 

If the request is approved, an AKD Student Travel Grant Payment Voucher will be attached, along with other directions and attachments.

NOTE: If an application is approved, but a student’s abstract is not selected for presentation from the regional society for the conference, please inform the Executive Office so the funds may be used for other students.
